Here are the lyrics for the original songs on Dirt Track Racer's 2019 album, "Something's Gotta Give."
Something’s Gotta Give by Geoff Hansplant
Thought that I had lost him back in Birmingham
Picked me up outside of Carbondale
Private eye been tracking me all across this land
I just can’t seem to shake him from my tail
Hope you get this letter that I sent ‘round your ma
Should be there about a week or so
Take the twenty dollar bill and get you to Saint Paul
Ain’t much time, so pack your case and go
Can’t believe a single thing that paper got to say
They don’t know ‘cause they weren’t there that night
All these so-called witnesses tellin’ lies and gettin’ paid
Believe me, it ain’t so black and white
Hitched a ride on fifty-one outside of Tamaroa
Rode me all the way to Ocanee
Tried to call you from a bar, they must have tapped your phone
Ten minutes more, be under lock and key
Don’t forget to bring along that satin dress
You know the one we bought in ol’ Saint Lou
Got trouble on my trail and yet, I must confess
The one thing on my mind is holding you
Couldn’t blame you if you turned and ran the other way
I realize this ain’t no way to live
But darlin’ if you loved me once, believe me when I say
I’ve been pushing hard and something’s gotta give
Can’t believe a single thing that paper got to say
They don’t know ‘cause they weren’t there that night
All these so-called witnesses tellin’ lies and gettin’ paid
Believe me, it ain’t so black and white
Don’t tell your ma or anyone just what you’re gonna do
Don’t take your phone, just leave it in the drawer
There’s a little deli in Saint Paul on Cleveland Avenue
Be a package waiting at the kitchen door
I’ll meet you there on Friday night if I can keep a step ahead
If we beat ‘em to the border, we’ll be fine
But if Sunday comes and I’m not there, I’m very likely dead
Take that package home and best to keep it quiet
Couldn’t blame you if you turned and ran the other way
I realize this ain’t no way to live
But darlin’ if you loved me once, believe me when I say
I’ve been pushing hard and something’s gotta give
Pushing hard and something’s gotta,
something’s gotta give
Pushing hard and something’s gotta,
something’s gotta give
Pushing hard and something’s gotta,
something’s gotta give

I Won’t Be Here When You Get Home
by Geoff Hansplant
That’s a nice shirt, it goes with your eyes
Step over here, let me straighten your tie
Don’t look so sad, give me a smile
We’ve got a moment, let’s make it worthwhile
I won’t be here when you get home
You know I must be moving on
Never meant to let you think it could be any other way
I’ve got to go and it’s today
Tell me the story, remember the time
When we first met, you gave me that line
We could be lovers who’d grow into friends
What a beginning, but here is the end
I won’t be here when you get home
And though it breaks my heart to think of you alone
Just for now, let me go, or soon I’ll be in tears
I’m not as strong as I appear
Moving on is never easy
Still, we’ve got to go
Darling you will never leave me
I want you to know, I want you to grow
Life is what we make of livin’
Nothing’s guaranteed
And only one life are we given
I’ve got to be free, I’ve got to be free
Now you must hurry, you’ll be late for your train
Remember your hat, they’re calling for rain
Ask me no questions, I’ll tell you no lies
No time for regrets, no time for goodbyes
I won’t be here when you get home
And there’s no looking back, so keep on keeping on
Every shadow in my heart, I’ll be turning to face the sky
You’ve held my wings, now see me fly

Things I Should Have Said by Geoff Hansplant
Round and round I rehearse the lines ‘til I don’t know where to start
Every year adds another vine to surround this broken heart
If I could only hold you once, lay beside you in my bed
Perhaps I’d find the strength to say all the things I should have said
Up and down the water flows across the wine-dark sea
Who can say where you are bound or if you’re coming home to me?
Why can’t the tide just sweep away all these memories from my head?
Memories of days gone by and the things I should have said
I know I told you that I love you
I know I told you that I care
But how could I tell you I would fall apart
Should I need you and you’re not there?
I should have whispered I’d be lonely
I should have begged you not to go
I should never have promised I would wait for you
Why does it have to be so long?
If you hear me now, darling, hurry home
Another sun sets in the west, another moon must rise
Another day just like the rest, and you not by my side
How long must I search these shores for a footprint you have tread?
Crying out against the wind, all the things I should
have said
Crying out against the wind, all the things I should
have said

The Name She Gave by Geoff Hansplant
The name she gave was Angeline
From Santa Fe, in Arizona
And I could have set her straight
But decided it could wait
I could see she’d staked her life on that persona
She pulled a Winston from my pack
Whispered, “Thanks,” and cupped her hands below it
In the match light I could trace
Every line upon her face
And the shadow of the girl who used to own it
And she stared into the distance
Conjured up a spell
Blew it out in puffs of smoke she’d spoken
Painted me a picture
From a lie she knew so well
Ain’t it funny what we cling to when we’re broken?
The fingers of October’s chill
Lingered at the edge of conversation
As we shuffled in a trance
Like two strangers, dime a dance
With a moment’s warmth our only consolation
She laid her head against my chest
For a heartbeat we just held each other, dreaming
But she shuddered and she cried
‘Til with nothing left to hide
She handed me the tears that she’d been keeping
And a headlight flashed across us
A car pulled up beside
Rolled the window down in invitation
She leaned in for the barter
Slipped in for the ride
I dare say they weren’t headed for Salvation
The name she gave was Angeline
The tail lights in the distance tell the story
She was here and she was gone
I guess we’re all just moving on
Leaving trails of tears on roads we’ve marked for glory

One To Tango by Geoff Hansplant
Empty rooms with scattered boxes
Waiting for the moving van
Dripping faucet leaves an iron
Stain upon the porcelain
One last chance to look around
Before the ghosts reclaim their castle
It’ll be one to tango now
Found the scarf you used to wear
I could not bear to let it go
Wrapped around me like your arms
The way you held and loved me so
A simple piece of cloth that’s woven
Through with dreams that might have been
It’ll be one to tango now
Close my eyes, I hear your voice
So often you would say
Life is not a footrace we
Run in a straight line
Words so wise that never meant more
Than they do today
The dance goes on without us sometimes
Strolled along the beach at sunset
Like we used to do
Sifting through the sands of time and
Memories of you
A single set of footprints three steps
Forward two steps back
There’s still one to tango now
Close my eyes, I hear your voice
So often you would say
Life is not a footrace we
Run in a straight line
Words so wise that never meant more
Than they do today
The dance goes on without us in time
Tomorrow brings another sun
Another chance to shine
I’ll refuse to mourn for all that’s lost
I’m keeping it alive
Wherever I go, you’ll go with me
Let death be granted no dominion
Long as there’s one to tango now
Long as there’s one to tango now
Long as there’s one to tango now

Ghost in Midnight Blue by Geoff Hansplant
Late last night, half past four
Was that you came waltzing through my wall
Chasing, chasing down some yesterday?
Pulled that sheet up o’er my head
Laid there still like I was stone cold dead
Praying, praying you’d just drift away
Of all the ghosts that fill my heart
In different shades and hues
There’s only one tears me apart
A ghost in midnight blue
I may be right, I may be wrong
If love is dead why will it not stay gone
I keep waiting, for the sun to see me through
Another lonely night with a ghost in midnight blue.
I close my eyes, I just can’t sleep
I see your pretty face and weep
There’s no escape; it seems to me I’m stuck like glue
On a memory of a ghost in midnight blue.
The moon must rise and shadows fall
I hear your voice inside them all
Lorelei, Lorelei where have you gone?
It ain’t no use, it just ain’t right
You keep me up most every night
Trembling, trembling to your Siren’s song
Of all the ghosts that fill my heart
In different shades and hues
There’s only one tears me apart
A ghost in midnight blue
So sing it now, that sad refrain
That draws me in and wracks my brain
I’ve no defense; it’s bound to be my Waterloo An old, sweet song from a ghost in midnight blue
An old, sweet song from a ghost in midnight blue.

What The Heart Wants
by Geoff Hansplant & Julie Myers
Let me search your eyes
While the years just fall away
Love, it’s been so long
That I’ve been living for this day
Now who am I
To question or reason why?
What the heart wants, the heart wants
We have no say
Somewhere in your voice
I hear a song from long ago
Love, we’ve made our choice
Is there no way to get back home?
So tell me now
Shall I stop when I don’t know how?
What the heart wants, the heart wants
Is that so strange?
If I told you, if I told you
Everything I’ve seen
Would it hold you, could it hold you
Or is it just a dream?
Hold me in your arms
Just the way you used to do
Love, I’d give my world
Just to go on holding you
So don’t let go
If you do, I’ll surely fall
What the heart wants, the heart wants
It answers all
Give me just one smile
I know you must be on your way
‘Til we meet again
I’ll be living for that day
For you and I
Let’s not wrestle with the hows and whys
What the heart wants, the heart wants
What the heart wants, the heart wants
What the heart wants, the heart wants
It knows the way

Better Days by Geoff Hansplant
We've held the clouds
And drunk the rain
That soaked us to the very bone
We've run with crowds
Were half insane
And left us out here on our own
Can you believe it feels so long
Since that old sun been gone
But here's to better days
Better days to come
Who knows the road
Through a broken heart
Like we who've passed this way before?
We've sown our oats
Upset the cart
And now we're heading for the door
Were we naive or did we
Simply jump the starting gun?
But here's to better days
Better days to come
Each step you take
You're not alone
For I have wandered 'round this bend
When your heart aches
Just bring it home
Where I will always be your friend
There's time enough to grieve
Tomorrow when we're on the run
For now it's better days
Better days to come
Leave the snow behind
And meet me in the Spring
We've known better days
But better days are coming 'round again
The dawn will come
It has no choice
Just as our hearts will be beguiled
And stricken dumb
I need no voice
If I can only touch your smile
We're on our knees but reaching
Up towards the rising sun
So here's to better days
Better days to come
We're on our knees but reaching
Up towards the rising sun
So here's to better days
Better days to come
For us it's better days
Better days
To Come
